The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Lohman M. Bailey (ASN: 37553742), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, during an attack toward Hosingen, Luxembourg, the Division Reconnaissance Troop was affording flank protection by road patrols. Sergeant Bailey, in command of five other members of the troop, volunteered to contact adjoining units in Munshausen, Luxembourg, and shortly before dark when only five hundred yards from the village the patrol was fired upon by an enemy anti-tank gun. Sergeant Bailey and his companions, on foot, flanked and captured the enemy gun and ammunition. Voluntarily continuing on into the village they captured thirty-one of the enemy and by clearing the town eliminated a possible threat to the attacking Division. The courage, aggressiveness, and steadfast devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Bailey were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
