The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Charles O. Snyder (ASN: 32915840), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 27 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, during the attack on Hosingen, Luxembourg, Private Snyder, acting as communication sergeant of an assaulting rifle company, carried a heavy radio through waist deep snow drifts and ever rough terrain in order to maintain communication with the battalion. After a mortar concentration fell nearby, Private Snyder’s radio would not operate. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he crossed exposed terrain to borrow another radio. Advancing through heavy small arms fire with the leading elements of the company, Private Snyder was mortally wounded. His courage, determination, and loyal devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
