Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 54 (February 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant James H. Maneilly (ASN: 35388223), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 23 January 1945 in Luxembourg. On that date, Staff Sergeant Maneilly volunteered to lead a ten man reconnaissance patrol into Enscherange, Luxembourg. Approaching the village, withering machine gun fire forced the patrol to withdraw leaving a seriously wounded man lying on the road. With utter disregard for his own personal safety Staff Sergeant Maneilly crawled to the exposed position, and after giving first aid to the injured man, protected him with his body and delivered sporadic rifle fire to keep the enemy at bay. When an American armored car moved to them Staff Sergeant Maneilly placed the wounded man aboard and withdrew. His bravery, leadership, and steadfast devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
