The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Wallace J. Walter (ASN: 13100598), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 1 November 1944 in France. On that date, Sergeant Walter, during the assault on Letricourt, France, became separated from the squad in which he served as an assistant squad leader. In searching for his unit in the heavy morning fog, he suddenly came upon eight Germans and after shooting a rifle grenade into their midst he assaulted, killing three and capturing the remaining five. While conducting his prisoners rearward Sergeant Walter was painfully wounded but, undeterred, accomplished his mission before accepting medical aid. His courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
