The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John F. Flynn (ASN: 33304762), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. During an enemy attack against Heiderscheid, Luxembourg, on 24 December 1944, Staff Sergeant Flynn, in spite of the severe action, removed a fifty caliber machine gun from an exposed one quarter ton truck and put it into action in a house, destroying an enemy half track and killing enemy infantrymen. As ammunition supply became critical, he again left the cover of his position and supplied the embattled infantrymen with enough ammunition to repel the German attack. The courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Flynn were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
