The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Quartermaster Sergeant Stephen Edwin Chandler, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 5 April 1865, while serving with Company A, 24th New York Cavalry, in action at Amelia Springs, Virginia. Under severe fire of the enemy and of the troops in retreat, Quartermaster Sergeant Chandler went between the lines to the assistance of a wounded and helpless comrade, and rescued him from death or capture.
