Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 40 (February 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William F. Carr (ASN: 33354639), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 December 1944 in Belgium. On that date, while serving with a battalion anti-tank platoon which was stationed in a field north of Burnon, Belgium, Private First Class Carr observed a truck which was moving along a road near his position and which returned the rifle fire of American soldiers with machine gun fire from a gun mounted on the vehicle. Perceiving that the occupants were enemy, he fired his rifle and ran to intercept the truck which passed only to stop twenty yards beyond and to turn the machine gun fire on him. Falling to the ground, Private First Class Carr crawled in spite of the raking fire to within five yards of the vehicle. He then rose to his feet, ran and jumped upon the running board, firing a pistol into the cab, killing one and wounding the other occupant. The courage, aggressiveness, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Carr were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
