The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Anthony D. Vallera (ASN: 33367805), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 22 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, Sergeant Vallera was leading his machine gun section in an infantry assault when an enemy force of some forty soldiers armed with automatic weapons, grenade launchers, and mortars infiltrated through the left flank of the company, isolating Sergeant Vallera and his section from the advancing company. Although outnumbered, he immediately organized a skirmish line and directed his men to remain in their positions for further orders. He then crawled approximately one hundred yards to the enemy positions and hand signaled his comrades to join him. Sergeant Vallera next called to the enemy commander, demanding surrender. His bold move threw the enemy ranks into a state of confusion, whereupon Sergeant Vallera led his squad in an assault which completely demoralized and routed the enemy, leaving many killed and wounded behind. The bravery, leadership, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Vallera were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
