Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 29 (January 29, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert J. Thomas, Jr. (ASN: 0-1283339), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 28 November 1944 in France. In an attack upon the enemy on 28 November 1944, troops commanded by Lieutenant Thomas were seriously delayed in advancing due to an intense concentration of artillery, mortar, and small arms fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Thomas organized an assault on the strongly held enemy outpost which had the tactical advantage of good observation of the attacking forces. Assuming a commanding position in front of his troops, Lieutenant Thomas, by personal example, inspired the men to close with the enemy. Thirty enemy were killed or wounded when the outpost was successfully gained but this action also cost Lieutenant Thomas his life. His leadership, bravery, and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
