The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Julius Gralla (ASN: 42049983), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, Private First Class Gralla was stationed at a company command post when the position was assaulted on a flank by a German supported by tanks and artillery fire. Led by the First Sergeant, Private First Class Gralla and four other comrades held their fire until the enemy were within seventy-five yards of their position. Although under direct 88-mm. fire, Private First Class Gralla moved from the shelter of buildings into full view of the enemy firing his rifle and hurling grenades which contributed greatly in successfully repulsing the enemy thrust. His courage, aggressiveness, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
