The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Robert E. Grady (ASN: 35013448), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 24 December 1944 in Luxembourg. On that date, while in charge of the company command post during the temporary absence of the commanding officer, First Sergeant Grady and his men were assaulted on a flank by a German thrust supported by tanks and artillery fire. Perceiving the gravity of the situation and the importance of the position held, he organized his command group of five men, instructing them to withhold fire until the enemy was within seventy five yards. Although under direct 88-mm. fire, Sergeant Grady moved from the shelter of buildings, into full view of the enemy, firing his rifle and hurling hand grenades which coupled with the fire of his men, successfully repulsed the enemy thrust. His courage, leadership, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
