The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private J. H. Crane (ASN: 6930223), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 13 November 1944 in France. On that date, the Company in which Private Crane served as Acting Squad Leader was temporarily delayed by crossfire from a well defended enemy machine gun position. With utter disregard for his own safety, Private Crane advanced directly into the field of fire from a well defended enemy machine gun until he was able to fire at and kill the machine gunner. Then, with the support of his squad he rushed the position, completely neutralizing the enemy fire and enabled the company to proceed and attain the objective. The courage, leadership, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Private Crane were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
