The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Montgomery Long (ASN: 34307522), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 November 1944 in France. Sergeant Long was serving as an Artillery Forward Observer with an infantry company in an attack on the enemy. Although the company was temporarily impeded by intense artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, Sergeant Long moved forward to an exposed position to secure observation and proper reception for his radio, thereby planning and controlling the artillery fire and enabling the company to advance. During this action, he was wounded in the legs by shell fragments, but with utter disregard of his condition, he continued in the assault until the objective was seized. The bravery, aggressiveness, and loyal devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Long were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
