The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) John B. deBrun (ASN: 0-414606), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 31 December 1944 in Luxembourg. Captain deBrun, Battery Commander, demonstrated personal bravery by surveying the new craters for a shelling report in order that accurate data could be secured for counter battery fire to neutralize the enemy artillery. On 1 January 1945, under heavy enemy artillery fire, with utter disregard for his own safety, he again left his shelter to obtain data for shelling reports. The courage, resourcefulness, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Captain deBrun were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
