The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Harold P. Saks (ASN: 33320898), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 12 November 1944 in France. In a coordinated attack on the enemy, Staff Sergeant Saks assumed command of the platoon in which he served when the platoon leader and sergeant became casualties. Despite the intense enemy fire, he reorganized the squads, continuing the attack to successfully lead the men in seizing the objective of the platoon. His outstanding leadership, bravery, and loyal devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
