    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Joseph Wercholuk (ASN: 32064877), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 8 to 11 November 1944 in France. During this period, First Sergeant Wercholuk, assuming command of a company after all officers became casualties, led his company in continuous fighting with the enemy, successfully seizing all objectives, and establishing and holding a bridgehead against determined enemy efforts to destroy it. The outstanding leadership, courage, and loyal devotion to duty displayed by First Sergeant Wercholuk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
