Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 6 (January 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Warren H. McKinney (ASN: 35436744), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 26 November 1944 in France. Staff Sergeant McKinney, in command of a machine gun platoon, reorganized the platoon and the remaining elements of a rifle company into a fighting unit in an attack on the enemy. Despite the fact that Staff Sergeant McKinney and his group were outnumbered, and in the face of direct enemy machine gun fire, he successfully led them in routing the enemy and capturing the objective, repulsing later enemy assaults on territory gained. The personal bravery, leadership and loyal devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant McKinney were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
