The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Francis E. Smith (ASN: 34537723), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 October 1944 in France. On that date Private First Class Smith, a rifleman, volunteered to cross a flooded river in a daylight attempt to enter an enemy-held village, in order to secure information relative to the strength and position of the enemy. Crossing the river on a narrow under water foot bridge, he gained entry into the town. Quickly and skillfully he located enemy road blocks, gun positions, and the enemy command post location. Returning to his company area, he related the information he had gained and requested permission to cross the river again that afternoon for further information. From this patrol he failed to return. The exemplary initiative and inspiring devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Smith were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
