Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 108 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Paul A. Oswald (ASN: 35330870), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 17 November 1944. As an infantry platoon sergeant, Technical Sergeant Oswald distinguished himself in an assault on a fortified enemy held town. When the advance of the platoon he was leading was temporarily stopped by intense enemy machine gun fire, Technical Sergeant Oswald moved forward and with cool courage and total disregard for his own safety, destroyed the machine gun position with hand grenades and rifle fire. This courageous action enabled the platoon to continue and advance and to accomplish the mission. His bravery, resourcefulness, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
