Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 108 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Bobby G. Mays (ASN: 38327150), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 November 1944. On that date, the infantry squad of which Sergeant Mays was a member had the mission of attacking and clearing a fortified enemy held town. As the unit advanced into the town it encountered a withering machine gun crossfire. The squad leader became a casualty, whereupon Sergeant Mays assumed command of the squad and directed the resumption of the attack. He divided the squad into a base of fire and maneuvering force and by this strategy accomplished the capture of the fortified position and thirty-five prisoners. His inspiring leadership, cool courage, and unhesitating devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
