The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Acie W. Clark (ASN: 38430706), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 October 1944 in France. On that date, the rifle platoon of which Staff Sergeant Clark was a Squad Leader had the mission of attacking and clearing a town of the enemy. The assault proceeded rapidly until it was hampered by enemy machine gun and small arms fire from a building at the edge of the town. Staff Sergeant Clark, acting swiftly and with great courage, ran to this structure and attempted to force entry. Despite enemy fire and grenades, he ultimately succeeded and caused the surrender of one German officer and fifteen soldiers. This heroic action enabled his platoon to successfully continue the advance. His bravery, initiative, and leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
