Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 107 (December 17, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class J. T. Suggs (ASN: 34545828), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 12 and 13 September 1944 in France. On the night of 12 September, Private First Class Suggs and four companions occupied a listening post in advance of the positions of the unit to which they were assigned. At 0300, 13 September 1944, the enemy launched a counterattack in the direction of this outpost. Two men were sent back with information of the assault, but Private First Class Suggs and two comrades stayed in the position in a valiant attempt to repel the enemy. When daylight came and aid was able to reach the outpost, there was found within a radius of ten feet, five enemy dead, two wounded, and four machine guns and a bazooka, all accounted for by Private First Class Suggs and his comrades when their position was assaulted. The conspicuous bravery demonstrated by Private First Class Suggs was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
