Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 107 (December 17, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Lanson J. Hebert (ASN: 38193161), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 November 1944 in France. On that date, the platoon of which Staff Sergeant Hebert was guide was participating in an assault on an enemy occupied town. Hostile forces were well positioned and had in support automatic weapons and mortars in locations at the outskirts of the objective. As the attack progressed, the platoon became suddenly subject to a withering crossfire. Realizing the gravity of the situation and displaying excellent leadership, cool courage, and outstanding tactical ability, Staff Sergeant Hebert, who had been at the rear of the platoon, selected a small force, moved around to the flank and overran and captured two machine guns and crews. This gallant deed enabled the platoon to advance to the appointed objective. His actions and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
