Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 107 (December 17, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard Eugene Alston (ASN: 0-533406), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 November 1944 in France. On that date, Lieutenant Alston led his weapons platoon in support of an infantry assault on a complex and well fortified enemy position. Time and again he exposed himself to withering fire in order to place machine guns in the most advantageous positions. Because of the strength of the enemy fortifications, it was obvious that great force was needed to make the assault. Unhesitatingly, and at his own volition, Lieutenant Alston joined the attacking elements. Operating in the front ranks of the charge, firing his weapon, throwing hand grenades, and shouting words of encouragement to the men following him, he was killed at the climax of the attack. His invincible spirit and gallant courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
