Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 103 (December 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Edward J. Cassidy (ASN: 33323212), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 November 1944 in France. On that date, Staff Sergeant Cassidy, platoon sergeant, during an attack on the enemy was forced to assault the position frontally. Displaying cool courage and utter disregard for his own safety, divided his platoon in two groups and under covering fire of one group, personally led the other group directly into the enemy position, capturing seventy-five and killing many of the enemy. The outstanding bravery, aggressive leadership, and sincere devotion to duty exhibited by Staff Sergeant Cassidy were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
