The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James J. Monahan (ASN: 42079889), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 November 1944 in France. On that date, Private First Class Monahan was outposting a road leading to an enemy held village when he was captured in the darkness by an enemy patrol led by an English speaking officer. The officer ordered Private First Class Monahan to lead the patrol into the American lines, and in case they were halted by other outposts to say that it was an American patrol. As he led the patrol down the road, Private First Class Monahan recognized a friendly outpost. At great personal risk, he called to the friendly troops, telling them he was an American leading an enemy patrol. In the ensuing fire fight Private First Class Monahan made his way to safety. As a result of his action five of the enemy patrol, including the officer, were captured. The outstanding bravery, resourcefulness, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Monahan were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
