The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) John R. Porteous (ASN: 0-1184927), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 905th Field Artillery Battalion 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 November 1944. On that date, while acting as a Forward Observer with a company of an infantry regiment during an attack on the enemy, Lieutenant Porteous received wounds from shell fragments. Although urged to retire for treatment Lieutenant Porteous, with complete disregard for his own safety and comfort, elected to remain as Forward Observer and complete his assignment. Repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire, he continued in his mission until he received additional wounds which resulted in his death. The outstanding personal bravery, determination, and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Porteous were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
