The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Gerald P. Sheehan (ASN: 0-1296753), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 4 October 1944 in France. On that date, Captain Sheehan was called upon to assume control of an infantry company which had lost its commanding officer and key personnel during a fierce engagement with the enemy. Captain Sheehan immediately reorganized the company and despite the intense enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire to which he was exposed, encouraged his men to follow him and successfully accomplished the mission assigned. The inspiring leadership, personal bravery, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sheehan were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
