Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 95 (December 5, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Arnold G. Claussen (ASN: 35359181), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States from 9 to 11 November 1944 in France. During this period, Staff Sergeant Claussen was called upon to assume command of an infantry platoon when the platoon sergeant became a casualty during an attack upon an enemy held objective. Staff Sergeant Claussen successfully led his men in the seizure of three French towns, capturing many prisoners. Later in the attack, upon having established a defensive position on the east bank of the Nied River, Staff Sergeant Claussen returned under raking enemy fire to lead the remainder of his company over the bridge, thereby accomplishing the mission assigned. The inspiring leadership, outstanding courage, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Staff Sergeant Claussen were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
