The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Newman R. McLarry (ASN: 0-533462), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 5 and 6 September 1944 in France. On those dates, in an assault-boat attempt to cross a river, severe enemy artillery, mortar, machine gun and small arms fire was encountered, temporarily halting the advance of the company to which Lieutenant McLarry was assigned as a rifle platoon leader. Realizing the boats were stranded due to casualties and damage, and with utter disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant McLarry moved over the exposed river bank into the swift moving stream and rescued his wounded comrades by securing the stranded boats with a rope and towing them to the friendly shore. Lieutenant McLarry and his platoon then secured an island, essential to the crossing of the main body of troops. The success of this mission contributed greatly in attaining the objective of the battalion. The personal bravery, endeavor, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant McLarry were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
