Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 94 (December 4, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph W. Hull (ASN: 0-1184853), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 11 November 1944 in France. On that date, Second Lieutenant Hull distinguished himself while serving as a Forward Observer. Equipped with only a radio, he proceeded with the company to which he was assigned, in an attack across a hill where heavy shelling from mortars and artillery was encountered. With utter disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Hull moved alone to the top of the hill in an attempt to discover the source of the fire. While in an exposed position under direct enemy fire Lieutenant Hull directed fire missions upon the enemy battery, successfully having it destroyed, and thus enabling the infantry to advance. The outstanding courage, resourcefulness, and constant devotion to duty exhibited by Second Lieutenant Hull were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
