The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Lawrence C. Anderson (ASN: 33247886), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 17 September 1944 in France. On that date, while laying communication lines between Battalion Headquarters and the companies committed to an attack on the enemy, the wire was severed by a mortar shell preventing transmission of an urgent message to the tanks, then in support. Technician Fifth Grade Anderson unhesitatingly volunteered to deliver the message on foot. Soon after leaving the Battalion Command Post he was wounded by small arms fire, but with utter disregard for his injury continued on his mission and successfully delivered the message. The ensuing tank support saved many lives and was instrumental in the success of the attack. The bravery, determination, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Anderson were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
