The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Michael E. Mahoney (ASN: 1-1304755), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 November 1944 in France. While serving as a rifle company commander, in the process of attacking the enemy on high ground, First Lieutenant Mahoney and his company were receiving intensive mortar and machine gun fire which temporarily slowed their advance. With utter disregard for his own safety First Lieutenant Mahoney crawled some two hundred yards toward the enemy machine gun positions to observe their fire at which time he was severely wounded in the arms and legs. Despite his injuries he continued to observe the enemy until he had accurately located their positions and relayed his information to the company command post. The personal bravery, loyalty, and fidelity displayed by First Lieutenant Mahoney were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
