The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Peter G. Kuntz (ASN: 15316794), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 October 1944 in France. On that date, Technical Sergeant Kuntz was serving as Platoon Sergeant of the reserve platoon of his company in an attack o the enemy at which time the company was subjected to extremely heavy mortar and raking machine gun fire. One of the assault platoons sustained the loss of both the platoon leader and platoon sergeant and Technical Sergeant Kuntz received a severe shrapnel wound in the leg. Showing aggressiveness and determination Technical Sergeant Kuntz bandaged his injured leg and voluntarily made his way to the leaderless platoon, assumed command, and directed and encouraged the men in the assault until the objective had been taken. The outstanding bravery, leadership and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Technical Sergeant Kuntz exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
