The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William A. Hanna (ASN: 0-1285581), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 20 and 21 September 1944 in France. While serving as Supply Officer, Lieutenant Hanna distinguished himself by gallantry in action in keeping vital supplies flowing to his battalion although cut off from the rear echelon by enemy action. His supreme courage and outstanding leadership in successfully fighting his way through strong enemy resistance with only a handful of men from the supply train, resulted in the capturing of 48 Germans and on the following day taking nine more prisoners. The personal bravery, calmness under enemy fire, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Hanna were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
