The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Robert P. Steptoe (ASN: 0-1165576), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 9 October 1944 in France. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Captain Steptoe proceeded through anti-personnel mine explosions to render medical aid to two seriously wounded men. While administering first aid, an enemy mine exploded, severely wounding Captain Steptoe in the face and eyes. Although completely blinded by the explosion, Captain Steptoe, unmindful of his own injuries and with calm determination, proceeded to crawl in the direction of the road in an attempt to secure further aid for the wounded men. The heroism and unselfish devotion to his men displayed by Captain Steptoe was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
