The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Marion W. Merritt (ASN: 0-535961), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 October 1944 in France. While commanding an anti-tank company, Lieutenant Merritt made his way forward to an enemy held house, and displaying cool courage and utter disregard for his personal safety, killed one enemy sniper and captured several enemy riflemen. His action provided for the uninterrupted advance of the attacking company and saved the lives of many men. His personal bravery, resourcefulness, and devotion to duty, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
