The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Hiram D. Ives (ASN: 0-263687), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 March 1945 in Germany. At Britten, Germany, a battalion spearheaded an important attack after the commander was evacuated. Lieutenant Colonel Ives, Regimental Executive Officer, personally went to the assault companies, remained with them throughout the action and overcame the enemy’s tactical advantage. With renewed confidence the battalion drove the Germans to rout. Such inspirational leadership and resourcefulness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
