The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Glendon O. Dunn (ASN: 35482999), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving with the 80th Infantry Division on 4 October 1944, in France. Two eight year old French boys were discovered in the unit motor pool stopped near some gasoline cans. One boy was seen pouring something on his trousers from a bottle. The children were directed to leave the motor pool, which they did. Private First Class Dunn started walking in the direction of a vehicle parked a short distance away, when he hear a loud scream from one of the children. The child, with his clothing ablaze and screaming loudly, ran into the woods. Private First Class Dunn, disregarding his own safety, caught the child, threw him to the ground, and extinguished the fire thereby saving the child from serious burns or death. The courageous action of Private First Class Dunn reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
