Headquarters, 27th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (July 29, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Thomas W. Edgar (ASN: 32067315), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 20 and 29 June 1944. Private Edgar, during an assault on an enemy held hill, discovered a wounded soldier lying in an exposed position on the crest, under enemy machine gun fire. He directed the removal of the wounded soldier, and then further exposing himself, crossed over open terrain to bring friendly tanks to the position. The tanks silenced the enemy machine gun. On another occasion he removed a badly wounded member of his squad from an exposed position, under heavy fire. That same night after dark, he volunteered to go to the battalion aid station several hundred yards away, to secure blood plasma needed for the wounded man, knowing the area was covered by enemy machine guns. He secured the plasma thus contributing greatly to the saving of the man’s life.
