The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert Joseph Sitcer (ASN: 20203699), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 7 July 1944. During strong enemy counterattacks, but with friendly troops falling back to our own lines, Corporal Sitcer skillfully organized and controlled the fire of his men, so that they would not fire into the withdrawing wounded. By keeping the enemy forces pinned down with great amounts of small arms fire, Corporal Sitcer aided considerably the return of many American wounded to safety. By his gallant action and continued disregard for his own life, Corporal Sitcer showed outstanding qualities of leadership, and was an inspiration to the men under him.
