The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Irving Brown, Jr. (ASN: 0-407489), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 30 June 1944. Captain Brown proceeded on foot from the battalion command post to the forward position of the companies of his battalion through heavy enemy rifle and machine gun fire to organize the evacuation of the wounded, and to carry out the battalion commander’s orders for the setting up of the perimeter defense of those companies for the night. The gallant action of this officer steadied an otherwise unstable situation, and laid ground work for a strengthened perimeter, and a further advance the next day.
