The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private John G. Deming (ASN: 20203565), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 3 July and 18 July 1944. Private Deming was a voluntary member on a patrol which knocked out three enemy tanks on 3 July 1944. On 18 July, again voluntarily he joined a patrol which had taken forty-seven enemy prisoners, and accompanied a group to locate the body of one of his comrades who had been missed. The group came under enemy sniper fire and as a result of the fire, he was killed.
