Headquarters, 27th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (July 29, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Louis Robert Almeida (ASN: 39153694), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 24 June 1944. During the night of 24 June, one of his battery officers received serious gun shot wounds. Private First Class Almeida, with complete disregard for his own safety got out of his fox hole and went to the lieutenant’s aid. Since it was impossible for Private First Class Almeida to get immediate first aid or to have the officer evacuated, due to the area being exposed to heavy enemy fire, he remained throughout the night, guarding and giving whatever first aid he could to the wounded lieutenant. Later in the campaign while faithfully performing his duty as a lineman with the liaison detail, Private First Class Almeida was shot by an enemy sniper, which resulted in his death.
