The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William Allander (ASN: 39112366), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 27th Infantry Division at Saipan, Mariana Islands, during the period 29 June to 8 July 1944. On 29 June 1944, when several of the enemy attempted to infiltrate through the lines, Sergeant Allander stood up and fired into the group, and kept firing until they broke and ran. Later in the campaign, he was leading his squad in seeking out enemy snipers, following a counterattack by the enemy, when he was killed.
