The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Steven J. Sewell, United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving as a Pilot with Marine Attack Squadron 211, Marine Aircraft Group Twelve, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the evening of 22 November 1968, Captain Sewell launched as Section Leader of a flight of two A-4 Skyhawk aircraft assigned to provide close air support for a Marine unit which was pinned down by a heavy volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire from a large enemy force occupying fortified positions near DaNang. Arriving over the designated area, he contacted the tactical air controller (airborne) and was informed that the proximity of friendly and hostile positions would require precise ordnance delivery. Despite adverse weather conditions and darkness which greatly limited visibility, Captain Sewell unhesitatingly commenced a series of determined attacks against the enemy emplacements and came under intense hostile fire. Disregarding his own safety, he fearlessly maneuvered his Skyhawk over the hazardous target area during repeated bombing runs, delivering his ordnance upon the enemy fortifications with pinpoint accuracy. His bold initiative and resolute determination were instrumental in silencing the hostile fire, enabling helicopters to safely evacuate friendly casualties. Captain Sewell’s courage, exceptional aeronautical ability and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
