The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Lourn Clifford Doan (ASN: 0-1297173), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 25 November 1944 in France. On that date, Captain Doan, an infantry rifle company commander, was given the mission to assault and capture a strongly fortified enemy position. A stream and anti-tank ditch barred the approaches to the objective. After crossing the stream, the company was subjected to intense machine gun fire, followed by a heavy concentration of mortar and artillery fire which temporarily halted the advance. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Doan, exposing himself to the intense fire, reorganized the company and continued the assault, successfully seizing the objective. It was while he was consolidating the positions gained that he received wounds resulting in his death. The outstanding leadership, determination, and sincere devotion to duty displayed by Captain Doan were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
