Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 1337 (April 16, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Donald J. Meador (ASN: RA-18559921), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company B, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Group, 18th Military Police Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Meador distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 23 February 1969 as squad leader of an ambush patrol outside the southern perimeter of Long Binh Post. Spotting flashes from rockets and mortars being launched against the post, Sergeant Meador immediately called for and adjusted accurate countermortar fire on the communist’s positions. A large body of enemy troops then attempted to cross a river just below his location and within minutes elements of this force began placing intense mortar and small arms fire on his small patrol. Exposing himself to the enemy barrage, Sergeant Meador adjusted artillery and mortar fire on the aggressors and moved among his men giving advice and encouragement. Under his courageous leadership, at least fifty of the enemy were killed and a major attack against Long Binh Post was prevented. Staff Sergeant Meador’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
