The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Coast Artillery Corps), [then Lieutenant Colonel] Pierre Bacot Denson (ASN: 0-16278), United States Army, for gallantry in action from 10 July 1943 to 12 July 1943, in Sicily. During the assault landings in Sicily, Colonel Denson, in command of the 107th Anti-aircraft Artillery Group, II Corps, learned that some of his troops were being landed a considerable distance out of position. He made his way ashore in an assault wave under enemy artillery fire and strafing from enemy planes, collected and reorganized his scattered troops and established a coordinated air defense of the beaches and troops he was assigned to cover. His determination to carry out his mission under hazardous and difficult circumstances reflected the highest standards of military discipline, and was a great contribution to the success of the operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Denson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
