The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private Frank H. Melton (ASN: 35107094), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. During a heavy enemy bombardment of his ship, Private Melton, displaying outstanding coolness and bravery under fire, assisted in extinguishing the resulting fire before it could reach the ship’s cargo of highly inflammable gasoline. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Melton (ASN: 35107094), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division in the period from January to April 1943. While his battalion was being attacked by enemy planes, Private Melton, despite heavy strafing and shelling and the constant danger of exploding ammunition in burning vehicles on either side, remained at his gun and directed heavy and accurate fire at these attacking planes. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
